COMPASS Testing
The COMPASS is a computerized adaptive testing system that
helps place students into appropriate mathematics, reading,
and writing classes. Students who score less than 18 in Reading,
English or Math are required to take the COMPASS test. In addition,
students wanting to take college algebra must have a math ACT
of at least 20 to be exempt from the math COMPASS test.
Cost: There
is no fee for first-time test takers. The re-testing fee is
$7.00 per section or $20.00 for all three sections. Pay in
the Business Office and bring the receipt to retest.
Test
Schedule: Walk-in
testing is available Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to
2:00 pm in the Assessment Center room 110 in the Anderson Technical
Building. Bring a photo ID to the test.
Beginning July
15, 2009 all first-time examinees will be
required to attend an exam orientation session prior to testing. Sessions
will be held each hour from 8:30am – 1:30pm in the Assessment
Center.
The
COMPASS Placement Test is designed to help you and your advisor
determine which classes you should take as you begin coursework
at West Kentucky Community and Technical College. It
is important for you to prepare for the test to ensure that
you are placed in the correct program sequence and minimize
the cost of your education in terms of time and money. You
can prepare for the placement test by requesting a copy of
sample questions from the Skills Enhancement Center Room 106
or the Assessment Center Room 110 both in the Anderson Technical

Individualized
COMPASS preparation
is available at no charge through the Skills Enhancement Center
in Room 106 of the Anderson Technical Building. For
more information call 270-534-3451.
COMPASS placement
scores adopted by KCTCS for writing, reading, and mathematics,
will be used to place students in appropriate courses. Students
will be given a copy of their COMPASS report after testing
and will meet with an assessment counselor and may make an
appointment to see an advisor in the Advising Center.
Exemptions from COMPASS testing will
be granted utilizing the following guidelines:
ACT English/Writing Sub-score |
18 or higher |
ACT Math Sub-score |
20 or higher for students wanting to
take college algebra |
Students with ACT sub-scores of 18 or higher (20 in math)
should contact the Advising Center at 270-534-3408 to schedule
an appointment with an academic advisor. Copies of the
ACT report must be submitted to the Records Office in room
107 of the Anderson Technical Building.
