Over 50 people attended Salsa Night at Haws Gymnasium February 27 at West Kentucky Community & Technical College. The event was sponsored by the Spanish Culture Club.
Everyone attending spent the evening sampling the local Spanish cuisine prepared by Maria Sanchez and dancing to the live music of Sergio Ortiz and Avis Sanchez, D.J.s from the Mayfield area. The main dishes included Chicken Enchiladas, Potatoe Enchiladas, Frijoles (Pinto Beans) and Arroz (Mexican Rice) topped off with two delicious desserts; Mexican Fruit Salad, which is made with seasonal fruit, and goat’s milk, along with a rich angel food cake. Attendees also had the opportunity to enjoy traditional Mexican drinks by the name of Horchata (coconut Milk) and Limonada.
The event was coordinated by Suehay Gomez, Spanish Club President, and Liliana Duran Spanish Culture Club Vice president.
After dinner, dance instructors, recently engaged WKCTC Students Melvin Acosta and Emily Ortega demonstrated the dance steps and then encouraged the entire group to stand in the aisles and follow along. Melvin and Emily both plan on graduating this May, but have shown interest in continuing to be an active part of the Spanish Culture Club. The Spanish night only got better after 9:30 p.m. with the arrival of the Paducah School of Dance. The studio brought out several dancers and gave a great performance for those in attendance.
All of our condiments, chips and Salsas were donated by local restaurants. We would like to say thank you to the following restaurants for their donations: El Chico, Los Amigos (Hinkleville Rd), Tribeca, and La Flor de Michoacán. Backyard Burgers of Lone Oak provided the ice tea.
The Spanish Club sponsors are Carolyn Perry, Astarre Gudino, and Jipaum Askew-Robinson.
