Kentucky Ice Storm 2009: Meeting the Needs of the Distance Learner

During the night of January 26th about one inch of ice accumulated in the eleven counties of far western Kentucky.

By the morning of the 27th snow had begun to fall and add to the weight on power lines and tree limbs. Limbs began to crack and fall by 2:00 pm on the 27th. By 4:00 pm most of the power in the area was off. Seven of nine Paducah, Kentucky substations that distribute electricity to the city were out and 22,500 customers (100%) of the people were without electricity. (more)


Graduation and Honors
Set for May

West Kentucky Community & Technical College will hold commencement exercises on May 15, 2009 at the Luther F. Carson Four Rivers Center in Paducah. Graduation will begin at 7 p.m.

Each graduating student will get up to five tickets for family or friends and can pick them up in the WKCTC Bookstore in April when purchasing a cap and gown.

The Honors Ceremony will be held Thursday, May 14, 2009 in Haws Gymnasium at 6:30 p.m.

   
New Pre-Employment Training and
New Training Center in Kevil
 
A new West Kentucky Community & Technical College Training Center in Ballard County is one of several new opportunities for FREE, pre-employment training, college officials announced February 20, 2009.

With more than $500,000 from the Kentucky Workforce Investment Network Systems (KY WINS), the College has partnered with USEC, local business/industry, and the Kentucky Community & Technical College System (KCTCS) to provide short-term, pre-employment training in health physics, welding, HVAC, and masonry. Kentucky’s Community and Technical Colleges Working To Meet New Economic Challenges

 

A changing economy, shifting demographics, an inadequately skilled workforce, and the downturn in Kentucky’s economy could mean a devastating storm brewing on the horizon, said Dr. Michael McCall on January 21.

“All of these factors are impacting what we do and where we’re going,” McCall, president of the Kentucky Community & Technical College System, told more than 100 members of the Rotary Club of Paducah at the Carson Center Wednesday. McCall was the guest speaker at the club’s weekly meeting. (more)

 

 


WKCTC Awarded $1.9 million Federal Job Training Grant
 
The U.S. Department of Labor awarded $1.9 million to West Kentucky Community & Technical College under the Community-Based Job Training Grants Initiative.

WKCTC was among 68 community colleges and community-based institutions that competed successfully for nearly $123 million. Awardees were chosen from among 274 applications received in response to a competition announced Oct. 10, 2008. (more)
